Poem: Sunbeam

A crack of light, beneath a shade
more of a sliver, a shaft, a blade
this is what I can see today
this is what’s getting in my way

Something small, and distracting
somehow stops me from acting
takes up, consumes part of my mind
away, along with some of my time

Time spent writing this
is not all without purpose
my distraction has become my mindfulness
giving task to idle fingertops

Inspiration, it’s called when used
and so it serves me as a muse
this shred of light, of warmth, of hope
helps focus me, and helps me cope

What was unnoticed, simple and small
has become this writers creative call
something from nothing, like rain from a cloud
brings quiet thoughts, from thoughts once loud

I’ve settled in, and morning has broken
no longer restless, yet clear spoken
focus and peace from light, a shred
carry me through the day, heart looking ahead.
